Understand what the insecurities are behind the oppression and prejudice of those who oppress and prejudice.
What is the insecurity underlying those who oppress and prejudice.
For example, we feel bad when we see someone with a big attitude in a store.
If that person comes to sit next to me, I feel that I will not be able to eat or drink tea peacefully.
So, let’s think about the anxiety behind a person with a big attitude. Then, try to understand what they are feeling uneasy about.
There are people in the world who say nasty things to others, but the reason why it is wrong to say such nasty things is because it literally makes them feel uneasy. And what happens when you make someone feel insecure, that insecurity always turns into aggression.
If the person happens to be in an environment where he/she can invoke prejudice and oppression when he/she feels insecure, expect something to happen. A power harasser is not a power harasser anytime and anywhere, but a power harasser when there is someone who is capable of power harassment in a situation where power harassment is possible.
By the way, it is important to note that just because you understand their anxiety does not mean that you should sandbag them. If there is a way to effectively resolve the other person’s anxiety, it is better to take it, and if not, it is better to distance yourself and run away.
Prejudice and suppression are often thought of as strategies used by the powerful, but it is better to think of them as being invoked by those who are anxious in order to defend themselves. If a variety of knowledge or even a situation would relieve their anxiety, you can work to help them feel it.
What makes listening useful in the real world is that we can convince the other person that we are on his or her side by listening to them carefully before they become anxious.
For me personally, this has been painful at work. Looking back on it now, I know I could have gotten around it better. We all attack because we are insecure. The target changes and the fangs turn on you. I guess it was easier to attack because it was a completely closed space. I wish I could have been completely stupid or strong. If I were to go back now, I would keep a good record and go to the state or my boss to see which is the right thing to do. I think it was kind of a good experience.
